What is single-tasking?
Single-tasking is the load rule of one live task: one goal, one rule set, one named stop — not a personality, and not a talent for ignoring the room. The search phrase sounds like a virtue. The research treats it as a switching problem. Joshua Rubinstein, David Meyer and Jeffrey Evans (2001) showed that even a planned, voluntary switch has two stages of executive control. You drop the current goal. Then you load the rules of the next job. That reload is the tax. Single-tasking is the decision to pay it once.
A “live” task is the one whose rules are currently loaded: the sentence you are writing, the cell you are editing, the call you are on. A list of later jobs is not a second live task. A parked note is not a second live task. A Slack window that can ping you, a second document half-open, a phone face-up on the desk — those are live, because they can force a goal shift before you named a stop.

How is this different from staying on task, batching, or multitasking?
Staying on task is remaining with an already-open job until a stop you named. Single-tasking is refusing to open a second job while the first is still live. They share a family. They are not the same search. How to stay on task is the interruption rule: do not abandon the open file for a ping. This page is the load rule: do not start a second file beside it. You can stay on a task and still have email live in another window. That is remaining with a leak.
Task-batching is a cousin from the other side. Task batching groups items that share a rule set — all the invoices, all the replies — so you reload those rules once. Batching is still single-tasking at the level of the rule set. It is not an excuse to keep two unlike jobs live. Multitasking, as people use the word at a desk, is almost never two skilled motor tasks in true parallel. It is rapid serial switching: a few seconds on A, a few on B, the two-stage tax paid over and over. True parallel work exists in narrow cases: walking and talking, a practiced motor pattern beside a light conversation. Knowledge work is not that case. The document and the inbox do not share a rule set. Treating them as “multitasking skill” is the story the feeling tells. The lab tells a different one.


Why does a second live task keep appearing?
A second live task appears because something in the room can force a goal shift before you named a stop — a notification, an unfinished loop, a second channel left open, or the habit of checking when the current sentence gets briefly uncomfortable. None of these require a character flaw. They require a phone, a chat badge, a half-written paragraph, or a boring twenty seconds.
The mechanism underneath is the same two-stage control Rubinstein, Meyer and Evans described. Goal shifting is cheap to feel and not free to run. Rule activation is the quieter cost: the spreadsheet’s constraints are not the email’s, and loading them takes time, more when the new rules are complex, less when you were cued in advance. Single-tasking is advance cuing made into a load rule. You decide the goal once. You keep those rules loaded until the stop you named.
Sophie Leroy’s 2009 experiments added the part that makes a “quick check” expensive. When people switched away from Task A before finishing it, part of their attention stayed attached to A — attention residue — and that residue dragged down performance on Task B. Finishing A helped, but only when it came with real time pressure to disengage. Completion on its own, without that pressure, was not enough to fully release the earlier task. A second live job is often just an unfinished first job wearing a new window.
Ophir, Nass and Wagner (2009) then showed the habit is not training. They built a Media Multitasking Index and compared habitual heavy multitaskers with light ones. The heavy group — people who keep several streams open — filtered irrelevant information worse and performed worse on a task-switching test, despite more everyday switching practice. Practising interruption does not appear to build an interruption-resistance muscle. It seems to atrophy the filter that would otherwise keep the second job out.
The four loads that open a second job
Four ordinary loads open a second live task: a signal you did not ask for, a loop you did not park, a channel you left within reach, and a check you perform because the current sentence got hard.
- Notification exposure. Cary Stothart, Ainsley Mitchum and Courtney Yehnert (2015) found that simply receiving a cell-phone notification — without looking at the phone or touching it — disrupted performance on an attention-demanding task by roughly the same magnitude as actually using the phone. The signal is the second job. Silence is not enough if the badge still arrives.
- Unfinished-task residue. Leroy’s finding: switching before Task A is resolved leaves working memory tied up in it. The second window is not a clean start. It is Task A still running plus Task B trying to load.
- A channel left nearby. Adrian Ward, Kristen Duke, Ayelet Gneezy and Maarten Bos (2017) placed a phone on the desk, in a bag, or in another room. Available working memory and fluid intelligence dropped as the phone got closer — even when it stayed off and unused — and the effect was largest for people who described themselves as most dependent on their phones. Distance is the load rule. Face-down on the desk is still “live.”
- Self-interruption. The habitual check — email, a thread, a news app — performed not because anything happened, but because the current sentence got briefly uncomfortable. Ophir’s heavy multitaskers lived here. The second job is a mood repair dressed as coordination.
If the room itself will not hold still — a kitchen table, a shared house, a chat that is the job — you are not failing the load rule. You are missing a wall. How to be productive at home is the room version. This page assumes you can close a channel. If you cannot, manufacture a visible stop (headphones, a booked hour, a status line) before you blame the method.
Why does switching cost more than it feels like?
A single switch feels free because it is fast, but the bill is a compounding one: a time tax on every hop, a residue tax that outlasts the hop, a stress tax that shows up even when the work still finishes, and — for the heaviest switchers — a filtering tax that persists in a quiet room. The honest version is not a dramatic number. It is a quiet, repeated charge that never announces itself.
Gloria Mark, Daniela Gudith and Ulrich Klocke (2008) interrupted people during a document-editing task. Interrupted workers compensated by working faster, finishing in comparable or even shorter time than uninterrupted workers, with no reliable quality drop in that study. That sounds like a win until you see the cost: significantly higher stress, frustration, time pressure and effort. The file still closed. The person paid in a currency no completion-time metric captures. Single-tasking is not a claim that you will finish more widgets by 5 p.m. It is a claim that you will stop paying that hidden rate to look busy.
Ophir’s correlational split adds a slower cost. If the habit of keeping several streams open is linked with a weaker filter — and their heavy group was worse at ignoring irrelevant items even in a lab with no phone — then a day of rapid switching is not only expensive today. It may be making tomorrow’s filter a little cheaper to break. That is not a personality lecture. It is a reason not to treat “I’m good at juggling” as data. David Sanbonmatsu, David Strayer, Nathan Medeiros-Ward and Jason Watson (2013) measured actual multitasking ability against how often people did it. The people who multitasked most were not the ones best at it. Frequency tracked impulsivity and the belief that they were good, not the score.
Two honest caveats. Ophir, Nass and Wagner compared people who already differed in habitual media use, so the study cannot prove that multitasking causes worse filtering rather than people with weaker filtering drifting toward more streams. And Mark, Gudith and Klocke’s interruption study is a laboratory document task, not your Tuesday inbox. The direction — faster work at a stress cost; residue after an unfinished switch — is what transfers. The exact minutes will not.
Johann Hari’s Stolen Focus is the named book for this page because it names the environment that keeps opening the second job: feeds, sleep debt, stress, the design of the phone, not a private lack of grit. This spoke is the work-floor load rule. The book is the wider diagnosis. Use both. A closed laptop lid will not fix a twelve-force attention crisis. A twelve-force diagnosis will not park the open loop on your desk. The productivity library is full of systems that fail this way — more apparatus, same second channel.
Cal Newport’s Deep Work is useful here as a container, not as a brand: the undistracted block is where one live task can exist. Chris Bailey’s Hyperfocus makes the same cut from the other side of the table — one object of attention, deliberately chosen — and is easy to misuse as a mood. The load rule is colder. Name the object. Close the rest. Hold until the stop.
How do you actually single-task without a monastery?
You keep one live job by naming the output, closing the second channel, parking the loop before you leave, and batching the checks — conditions, not grit, and not a numbered product. This is not a step recipe. It is the same evidence run at the size of a real afternoon.
Name the output before you touch a second tab. One sentence of “done”: Draft the two-page brief, ugly is allowed. That sentence is Rubinstein’s goal-shifting stage made deliberate. You pay it once, on purpose, instead of paying a smaller version every time you re-decide what this block is for. If you cannot name the output, you are still choosing, which is a different stall. Implementation intentions help the start: “After I shut the extra laptop, I will write the opening paragraph.” The plan is for the live job, not for another scan of the inbox.
Close the second channel. Phone in another room, not face-down by the keyboard — Ward’s distance finding is the reason. Extra laptop lid down. Chat set to a window you will open later. Stothart’s notification result means a silent badge is still a second job. If the job is the chat, that is the live task. Then the document is the one you close. Single-tasking does not mean “never communicate.” It means one live rule set.
Park before you leave. When you have to stop, spend fifteen seconds writing where you stopped and the next physical action: Stopped after the second heading; next step is to paste the client quote. Leroy’s residue is an open loop. A written marker does a share of what full completion would have done, without requiring you to finish before you are allowed to stand up. Batch the checks. Two or three windows in the day for email, chat, and news. Outside those windows the default is closed. Time blocking is the calendar version other people can see. The Ivy Lee cousin is useful on the same night: the Ivy Lee method caps tomorrow at six and forbids starting two until one is finished. That finish-before-two rule is single-tasking written on paper. It is not a second system. It is this load rule with a cap.
Nicholas Carr’s The Shallows is the longer cultural version of Ophir’s filter: a mind practised on streams gets worse at holding a line. You do not need Carr’s whole argument to close a tab. You need the smaller claim: the second channel is training. Stop training it for ninety minutes and see whether the sentence gets easier. - Calling rapid switching a skill. Ophir’s heavy multitaskers were worse at switching. Sanbonmatsu’s frequent multitaskers were not the able ones. Practice at juggling is not evidence of juggling skill.
- Leaving Task A half-open. Completion alone does not clear residue. Write the next physical action before you open B (Leroy, 2009). A parked loop is not a live job. An unparked one is.
- Phone face-down on the desk. Nearby still taxes working memory (Ward, Duke, Gneezy and Bos, 2017). Distance is the fix. Silence is a different problem.
- Treating a second monitor as free attention. A second screen is a second channel if anything on it can force a goal shift. Close it, or make it a dedicated view of the same live job — the reference PDF for this paragraph, not the inbox.
- Buying a new app instead of closing a channel. A new system delivers the same short-term relief as the distraction it was meant to fix. That pattern has its own page: the shiny object tax.
- Waiting to feel focused before starting. Focus is more often the result of one live job under the right conditions than a mood you must catch. Name the output. Close the second lid. The feeling tends to follow.
- Confusing batching with juggling. A batch of like items is one rule set. Two unlike jobs with a timer between them is still rapid switching. If the rules change, you paid the tax.
When is it more than a load rule?
If remaining with one task has felt effortful and scattered across most days, most rooms, and most of a life — not just on days when the phone is nearby — the load rule is working on the wrong layer. Environment fixes assume a baseline attention system that holds once you remove the second channel. That assumption does not hold for everyone.
Persistent, cross-context difficulty sustaining attention is a different conversation than a Slack badge. This page is a work-and-habits method. A short, protected block after sleep is still single-tasking. A heroic block after four hours is theatre.

What about jobs that require monitoring several channels?
Then monitoring is the live job. Single-tasking does not mean pretending a support queue is a monastery. It means one rule set: the queue, or the document, not both with the story that you are good at both. Batch the document into a window the queue can survive without you, or hand the queue to a covered slot. If the role forbids a closed channel, manufacture a visible stop for the other work rather than running two unlike rule sets at once.
Does single-tasking mean I can never check email?
No. It means email is a live job when it is open, and a parked job when it is not. Two or three checking windows in a day keep the rules loaded on purpose.
