A clock-first day fails because it treats every booked hour as interchangeable, then blames willpower when a dead slot cannot hold the hard thing. The calendar is a map of availability. It is not a map of alertness. Once the map is treated as the terrain, the 2 p.m. deep-work block looks as serious as the 9 a.m. one, and the person who stalls in the second block looks lazy. Sleep is the blunt version. Van Dongen, Maislin, Mullington and Dinges (2003) kept 48 healthy adults in a laboratory and restricted time in bed to 8, 6, or 4 hours for 14 nights, or to 0 hours for 3 nights. Cognitive performance on the restricted 4-hour and 6-hour schedules got worse in a cumulative, dose-dependent way. Subjective sleepiness jumped early and then flattened — people did not keep feeling as impaired as they were becoming. A clock-first planner who “still has the afternoon free” can therefore book real work into a body that is already running a deficit. The hour is free. The fuel is not.

Vigilance is the finer version. Ariga and Lleras (2011) asked 84 students to do a 50-minute visual vigilance task. Performance dropped in the groups that stayed on the task. The group that made two brief switches — a rare secondary probe — held performance. Their interpretation is goal habituation, not a drained tank: the control system stops holding the goal active unless it is deactivated and reactivated. That is a narrower claim than “willpower runs out,” and it is useful here because it cuts against the folk story that a break is wasted time. Hagger and colleagues’ 2016 multilab registered replication did not find a reliable ego-depletion effect. That does not make sleep optional and it does not make Ariga and Lleras disappear. Chronotype is a measured timing pattern. Recovery during a workday depends on what the break actually is. Willpower-as-a-tank did not replicate. The slogan is still the right name for the feeling. It is not a licence to invent a coefficient for “energy units per hour.”

What the evidence does not show: a universal 90-minute work cycle you must obey, a unit of “energy” you can bank like money, or a proof that time management is useless. Kleitman’s basic rest-activity cycle is a sleep-science observation, not a project-management law, and we do not treat it as one.
