"Die to hesitation. Serve the mission."
Yamamoto Tsunetomo (1659–1719) was a Saga Domain retainer under Nabeshima Mitsushige and the voice behind Hagakure. A sickly younger son, page, and scribe, he wanted to follow his lord in death in 1700; the shogunate had banned the rite, so he became a priest and later dictated the conversations that became the book. He wrote a peacetime ethics of service, not a dueling manual.
