James M. Kouzes & Barry Z. Posner

"The research duo who distilled decades of ordinary people's best leadership moments into five learnable practices."

James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner are longtime leadership researchers and co-authors who have studied leadership together since the early 1980s. Kouzes is a fellow at Santa Clara University's Leavey School of Business, and Posner is a professor of leadership there. Beginning with thousands of surveys and interviews collecting people's own "personal-best leadership experience" stories, the two identified five practices that consistently appeared across leaders at every level, industry, and country, regardless of title or fame. Their model, first published as The Leadership Challenge in 1987 and now in its seventh edition, is supported by the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI), a 360-degree assessment tool used by organizations worldwide to measure the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership.
