Joseph Campbell

"Leave the known world. Come back with a gift the village can use."

Joseph Campbell (1904–1987) was an American teacher of literature at Sarah Lawrence whose comparative study of myth made the hero’s journey a public tool. The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949) mapped a single adventure under the world’s stories. Later work, including The Power of Myth with Bill Moyers, carried the same assignment: leave, change, and come back useful.
