David J. Schwartz (1927–1987) was an American marketing professor and motivational writer who chaired the marketing department at Georgia State University. He earned his PhD from Ohio State University in 1953 and spent years studying why capable, well-trained people often underperformed their own potential while others with fewer advantages consistently exceeded expectations. That research became The Magic of Thinking Big, first published in 1959 by Prentice-Hall, which has sold more than six million copies and remains one of Simon & Schuster's best-selling paperbacks decades after his death. Schwartz went on to build a career consulting on sales and management training, but this book remains his defining contribution: a plainspoken case that confidence is a discipline you build, not a gift you're born with.
