Impulsiveness is “what else is easier, right now, in this room?” Delay is “how long until I actually begin?” Setup, research, and playlist-picking are delay wearing a costume. Why the delay costs more than it feels like
The early ease of delay is real, and so is the later bill: Tice and Baumeister’s longitudinal study found more stress and worse work after the stall, not a free pass. Their students who put work off enjoyed lower stress early in the term. By the end, they were more stressed, reported more health complaints, and turned in poorer work. That is the trap the equation predicts. Near relief is vivid. Later cost is discounted. Impulsiveness makes the vivid thing win. None of that requires you to be “undisciplined” as a trait. It requires a near option that feels better than an abstract file.
Blunt and Pychyl mapped aversiveness onto delay: boredom, frustration, resentment, and the sense that the task is meaningless all travel with putting it off, and they show up at different stages of a personal project. Step 1 — Write the next physical action: one verb, one object
On paper or at the top of the file, write a sentence a stranger could watch you do: “Open the draft and write the title,” not “make progress on the report.” Expectancy rises when success is binary. Blunt and Pychyl’s aversiveness work is the reason: the whole project stays ugly; a first physical move can be merely boring, which is cheaper to start.
