Twyla Tharp

"Choreographer of the white room"

Twyla Tharp was born in 1941 and built a career in empty rooms. She founded Twyla Tharp Dance in 1965, made work for American Ballet Theatre, and took popular music onto Broadway with Movin’ Out. The Creative Habit (2003), written with Mark Reiter, is her field guide for walking into a studio on an ordinary morning: pack a box, install a start, scratch for material, and grade the attempt. The authority is practice, not a theory of genius.
