David Schnarch (1946-2020) was a clinical psychologist and sex therapist who pioneered \"Crucible therapy,\" a differentiation-based approach to marital and sexual intimacy that drew on Murray Bowen's family systems theory. He directed the Marriage & Family Health Center in Evergreen, Colorado, and taught as a professor of urology at Louisiana State University Medical School. Passionate Marriage, his best-known book for a general audience, argues that sexual desire and lasting intimacy are functions of personal psychological maturity rather than technique or compatibility, building on the clinical framework he first laid out for practitioners in Constructing the Sexual Crucible (1991) and later expanded in Resurrecting Sex (2002) and Intimacy & Desire (2009).
