"Harvard psychiatrist behind the metabolic theory of mental illness"

Christopher M. Palmer, MD is a Harvard psychiatrist who spent over 25 years treating patients with severe, often treatment-resistant mental illness. He is Director of the Department of Postgraduate and Continuing Education at McLean Hospital and an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. After watching the ketogenic diet dramatically improve a patient's treatment-resistant schizoaffective disorder, Palmer spent years researching the link between metabolism and brain function — work that drew on his own history of mental illness and a personal metabolic diagnosis. In 2022 he published Brain Energy, proposing that most mental disorders share a common root in impaired brain energy metabolism.
